CURTIS RICHARDSON OBITUARY
Curtis Allen Richardson left this life for his heavenly home on February 16th, 2023 at the age of 89 in Owasso, Oklahoma.
Born July 2nd, 1933 in Rome, NY, he was the son of Homer and Lelia Richardson, the youngest of five children.
After graduation from Rome Free Academy Curtis continued his education at Mohawk Valley Technical Institute and Utica College of Syracuse University.
He married Mariel McRobert of Adrian, Michigan on June 30th, 1956. Together they found their community in the village of Van Hornesville, NY where he built the home they lived in for over 55 years.
He was a technical writer for General Electric, and later Mohawk Data Sciences. When his position was relocated to New Jersey he re-invented himself selling insurance for Metropolitan Life gaining Rookie of the Year honors.
He later became a school business executive at Richfield Springs Central School, Owen D Young Central School, and later at Herkimer County BOCES, retiring in 1993.
Always active in his community, Curtis served on the ODY School board for over 13 years and the Van Hornesville Community Corporation. An Eagle Scout, he became a troop leader, volunteer fire fighter, bowling team member, Civil Defense officer and a Lay Speaker for the Methodist Church, as well as serving on many church committees. He also served on the Robert B. Woodruff Outdoor Learning Center committee. His devotion to his God, family and community was matched only by his sense of humor.
Curtis and Mariel were active Square Dancers for many years, participating with the local dance club at events and on holiday floats. He was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed fishing, deer and turkey hunting, gardening, camping, canoeing, Cross Country Skiing - anything outdoors. His cider press was a local attraction every Fall.
He enjoyed playing cribbage, bee keeping, geocaching, and writing about his numerous travel adventures with Mariel. Many of these stories were published in the Richfield Springs Mercury.
He was preceded in death by his Mother and Father, 4 Siblings; Irving Richardson, Arthur Richardson, Jean Nelsen and Greta Coppersmith and his daughter Cynthia Lu Richardson.
Surviving relatives include his loving and devoted wife of 66 years Mariel, son and daughter-in-law, Keith & Lynn Richardson, grandchildren Jennifer & her spouse Tim Berry, Rachel & her spouse Aaron Meador and great grandchildren Markayla Berry, Norah Meador and Silas Meador.
